Anne Leavitt, Professor of Philosophy and Liberal Studies The result is an interesting and evocative synthesis of a past vision and modern sensibilities.“ĭr. “Johnston’s translation is extremely faithful to Homer’s Greek text, and yet at the same time is characterized by a very readable English style, so that the clarity and fluency of this translation immediately set it apart from many other alternatives. Composed between 800 and 700 BC and telling the story of a war which took place over 3000 years ago, the Iliad is a true classic, its beauty rivaled only by its longevity. The book is accompanied by a glossary, maps and other study aids intended to help ensure that one’s initial venture into the world of the Iliad is a fruitful one. It has been designed, first and foremost for people who are reading Homer’s Iliad for the first time. This translation provides an accurate text of the Iliad in a modern English poetic form. ![]()

Similar issues can be seen in modern society, and, moreover, they have reflected in Kafka’s work The Trial. This opposition results in the appearance of a certain precedent because if there is any case of injustice, a person tries to resist it and overturn the law by referring to some higher principles that are related to morals, ethics, and people’s needs. ![]() At the same time, any law must be just, it is a fundamental rule of the world. Under these conditions, the question about the legal nature of multiple regulations emerges. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The book is also a love letter to activism, which isn’t to say it glamorizes it - quite the opposite. But that’s a small flaw in an otherwise marvelous read. Who provided the annotations, which are full of historical context, is less clear even though they’re helpful - mainly to an audience less familiar with both Black and queer history - they aren’t utilized as well as they might be for a full meta-textual effect. It appears that the book in our hands is the one he wrote for young people like himself who may also need to learn even as they throw themselves into activist work. ![]() At one point, Trey admits that among Rustin’s recommended books, he’s able to grasp the biographies but has a hard time with political theory. ![]() ![]() ![]() The attacks are being coordinated by a shadowy former Iraqi commando who has disappeared into Europe’s underground. This is a really gritty read, every image of death and murder that comes through is vividly described – as well as the depth in which the author goes into detail about the emotions that the characters go through (in particular the effects of grief and isolation) makes it seem as though while it is impossible to completely like them, with the female characters you get a real sense of why they felt that they had to do what they did. It is a story about a family curse, violence and death that recounts the story of the siege of Troy as seen through the eyes of three women: Clytemnestra, Cassandra and Elektra – but interestingly enough not from a woman who helped in some way to bring about the Trojan War, Helen. It is not easy to recreate a format that was so successful for your first novel and to then replicate it as equally if not better than before – but that is what Jennifer Saint has done with Elektra. ![]() Jennifer Saint follows her debut novel Ariadne with an equally compelling re-telling of the story of Elektra, her family and of course the famous Helen. ![]() ![]() The tree was sad because it had no longer its leafy branches to shield the boy from the rain. ![]() It didn’t have its branches anymore to pat him on the shoulder, but he supported him as he leaned on its trunk. Even for someone who knows about the above-stated things, Sigismondi’s execution (and that of the screenwriters Carey and Chad Hayes) falls short of her intention. For someone who does not view the movie as a take on the very genre of horror or James’ novel (most viewers) might feel the film does nothing: not tell a satisfying story, or be scary. The set-up is genuinely intriguing, but the pay-off is just abrupt and almost non-existent. That is the reason ‘The Turning’ has received mostly negative reviews. The above explanation for absurdism is integral for understanding the ending of ‘The Turning.’ By no means is the movie’s conclusion satisfying. What’s lurking in the shadows? We do not know, and that is what makes us scared. But what about the dark makes us so frightened? Well, it is actually our fear of the unknown that disguises itself as the fear of darkness. The dark is something universally scary and also something that can be observed in horror films from any corner of the world. Horror movies often explore what makes us scared, for obvious reasons. Apart from that, there is the theme of absurdism. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Each decade, in exchange for a protection ward from the Demons that terrorise the world, Orpheus takes a human offering to the Veil the place he lives and the home of Demons.
